What Does Carob Taste Like?
Share
Hi, I'm Marco, the founder of Cleo Nut Butter Co. The first time I tasted carob, what surprised me was how rich it was. It has a deep, roasted flavor and a smooth texture I wasn't expecting. That's how my very first flavor, Peanut Carob, came about.
So what does carob taste like?
Carob is naturally sweet and roasted, with a hint of caramel. Customers at markets around the Chattanooga area often describe it as a softer chocolate, and they're happy to hear it doesn't have caffeine. I like that description, but I think carob deserves to be enjoyed for its own flavor, not just as a stand-in.
What is carob?
Carob comes from the pods of the carob tree. The pods are roasted and ground into powder, or made into chips. Unlike cocoa, carob is naturally caffeine-free.
Carob vs. chocolate
- Cocoa has caffeine, and carob has none.
- Cocoa on its own is bitter, while carob is naturally sweet.
- Chocolate is sharp and rich. Carob is softer, toasty and a little caramel-like.
How I eat it
My favorite is simple: a spoonful on sliced bananas. The sweetness of carob and banana just works.
Try carob three ways
- Not-Ella Carob Hazelnut Spread: just hazelnuts and carob.
- Peanut Carob "Choco Chunk": roasted peanut butter with carob chips, the flavor that started it all.
- Cashew Carob "Choco Chunk": creamy roasted cashews with carob chips folded in.
